Learning to See Money Differently

This spring, I took two accounting classes (Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting) —not super exciting on paper, but they ended up making a much bigger impact on me than I expected. I honestly thought I was just checking off a requirement for my degree, but what actually happened was a shift in how I think about money. 💵💡
For most of my adult life, I’ve had this weird, anxious relationship with money. Even when things were totally fine, just talking about finances made me tense up. 😖 My husband has always handled our finances because I’d get overwhelmed just trying to process it all. I never really thought about why that was—just figured that’s how I was wired. 🤷♀️
But something about going through accounting this semester helped things click. 🔄 I started to see money more logically. It’s just numbers. And once I saw it that way, it didn’t feel so scary. 💁♀️➗ That simple realization made room for some important conversations—with my therapist, my husband, and both of my dads. There’s a whole backstory to why money felt so heavy for me, but I’ll save that for another time. What matters is that this was the beginning of a mindset shift I didn’t know I needed. ✨
I also run two little online businesses: Sparkle and Grace Gems (SGG) and Melody’s Used Gear (MUG). I’ve had SGG for a few years, but I never fully leaned into it because of that same mental block around money. 🚫💰. And MUG is a newer project I started to help my husband sell some of his music gear. On my very first sale, I forgot to factor in shipping and fees—and ended up making way less than I thought. Oops. 😬 That moment made me realize I wasn’t treating either business like a real business, even though I have the background.
I’ve worked in marketing. I have a degree. I know how this stuff works. But applying it to my work felt overwhelming—until now. 🙌

Thanks to those classes (and some really helpful convos with my support system 💕), I’ve been able to start organizing everything better. I’m finally having consistent financial check-ins with my husband, and both businesses are on a stronger path now. 💪
It’s still a journey, but this was a major breakthrough. And honestly? It feels really good to finally say that. 🌟
